new Beef Ag Mag Teacher's Guide to accompany the Beef Ag Mag. Divided
into three units the teacher's guide has an activity for each section
of the Beef Ag Mag. The 15-page "Nutrition and Food Safety"
unit includes Take a Vote which identifies beef preferences
of students, Your Nutritional Needs; Serving Size, Nutrition
and Fat Content; Nutritional Requirements; Meeting Your Nutritional
Requirements; examines factual information about beef as a nutritional
food and dispels some myths about beef, and Cooking and Food
Safety; and Fun and Easy Recipes to Make with an Adult provide
food safety tips and some quick ways to include beef in the diet.
The unit titled "Cattle Production and The Environment"
which includes Beef Basics; Grazing and Food Production and Land
That Can Produce Food starts to explore the issue of using grazing
animals in the human diet by examining the land in the world and
in the U.S. that can b grazed versus that which can produce only
crops. The 26-page teacher's guide closes with a unit exploring
the "Economic Importance of Beef." This unit includes
activities on the economic impact of beef production, co-products
and careers in the industry.
The teacher's
guide makes excellent use of graphs to share information and depict
a story for readers to decipher. Even if teachers are not teaching
about nutrition or land use, these graphs can be used in mathematics
or social studies classes. Students can prepare for standardized
tests by answering the questions posed by the activity sheets and
gleaning the information from the Beef Ag Mag of additional graphs
provided by the teacher's guide. Every adult should read the graph
about children's nutritional needs not being met. It contains some
shocking information that parents should pay attention to.
