'Caterpillar
Cam' Offers On-line View of Butterfly Hatchings
"Caterpillar
Cam", sponsored by the Illinois Ag in the Classroom program,
is giving students and teachers a glimpse into the world of butterfly
hatching. By visiting www.agintheclassroom.org and clicking on Caterpillar
Cam, visitors can watch larvae emerge into Painted Lady and Monarch
butterflies during the month of April.
Update:
the Monarchs emerged on May 17!
The captured
caterpillars climbed to the top of their container and hung upside
down during the first days of the April. From there, they will
curl up and shed their furry coats to enter the Chrysalid stage.
At the point, they will be moved to butterfly nets and emerge
into adult butterflies in 7 to 10 days.
The web
site has links to related lesson plans, books and information
on how to hatch butterflies in classrooms.
