Contest
Spotlights Agriculture, Science Connection
Making the connection between agriculture
and science is the focus of an essay contest for students in
grades six through eight. The "Boundless Science for Bountiful
Agriculture" contest is sponsored by the Council for Agricultural
Science and Technology (CAST) in collaboration with the Agriculture
Department's Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension
Service and Natural Resources Conservation Service.
Essays of
up to 500 words will be accepted until Nov. 1. Topics for the
competition include:
- Ag Science
in the City: "The Importance of Agriculture for Urban Areas."
- Alternative
Fuel Research: "Bioenergy Powering the Future."
- Conservation
and Resources: "Working Cooperatively to Ensure a Bounty
of Food and Natural Resources."
- Cultivating
New Technologies: "Producing Food in Space" or "Using
Lasers, Robots and Computers in Agriculture."
- Dynamic
DNA: "Boosting Agricultural Bounty with Genetics."
- Food Science
and Nutrition: "Using Science to Create a Safe and Healthy
Food Supply."
- Weather
and Crop Production: "The Impact of Atmospheric Sciences
on World Food Supply."
Contest
winners will earn recognition at several levels: school, congressional
district, state and national. The national winner, along with
his or her parents and teacher, will receive an expense-paid
trip to Washington, D.C., during National Agriculture Week in
March 2003. In addition, the national winner will receive a $3,000
savings bond. District winners will receive medals in addition
to a VIP luncheon and tour at their state's land grant university.
State winners will receive plaques and $100 savings bonds.
CAST is
an international consortium of 37 scientific and professional
societies. It assembles, interprets and communicates science-based
information on the regional, national and international levels
on the topics of food, fiber, agriculture, natural resources
and related societal and environmental issues to legislators,
regulators, policy-makers, media, the private sector and the
general public. State Farm Bureaus with memberships in CAST include
California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana,
Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Texas,
Virginia and Wyoming.
