University to Offer Courses on Agriculture and the Food System
A new breed
of higher education institution is being created to offer agriculture
and food systems courses via the Internet.
A group
of agriculture and food industry business executives and educators
met in Philadelphia February 25 to plan the development of Norman
Borlaug University (NBU), named for the winner of the 1970 Nobel
Prize and so-called father of the Green Revolution. Dr. Borlaug
has agreed to serve as chairman of NBU because its mission reflects
his own life's mission of helping to eliminate hunger worldwide
through technology and mass education.
The on-line
university is expected to help meet a growing demand for distance
education. A number of established colleges and universities
will partner with NBU to offer courses aimed at reaching a variety
of learners, including farmers and their families, agribusiness
executives, food company employees and other members of the global
food system. Earl Ainsworth, former editor of Farm Journal magazine,
will serve as CEO of the new university. For additional information,
contact Ainsworth at NBUniversity@aol.com.
