Frequently Asked Questions

Where Does Agriculture Fit in the School Curriculum?

Agriculture is not a separate subject that needs to be sandwiched into an already crowded curriculum. Rather, it is a multidisciplinary field that can be used to teach core subjects such as sciences, mathematics, social studies, geography, economics, health and nutrition, history, language arts, and visual arts.

To encourage educators to use agriculture as an effective teaching tool, a nationwide Agriculture in the Classroom program was created in 1981 as a partnership between the USDA and agricultural organizations. Since its inception, Agriculture in the Classroom (AITC) has reached millions of students and thousands of teachers in all 50 states. A network of AITC state coordinators and volunteers, many of whom are Farm Bureau members, conduct the program in communities across America.
